Mark Birbeck's RDFa The Theory and Practice of Structured Data Publishing (RDFa-01-01)
CODE: RDFa-01-01          DURATION: 1 DAY/S
RDFa The Theory and Practice of Structured Data Publishing is a one day course that will teach you all about RDFa, the next generation of structured information on the web.

Both Yahoo! and Google have announced that they are storing RDFa that their crawlers discover on web pages, in order to enhance the user experience, and produce more targeted results. This means that organisations publishing large quantities of data -- whether it's job vacancies, product reviews, or a directory of chemical compounds -- need to understand how to get the best from this exciting new technology.

LEARN HOW TO:
PROGRAMME
Morning
  • Understand why RDFa makes it easy to publish structured and linked data;
  • Analyse various architectural models for data publishing;
  • Review how Yahoo! and Google will see your data;
  • Examine a number of case studies, in particular those used in UK government projects;
  • be introduced to a number of semantic web technologies that will make it easier to adopt RDFa.
Afternoon
  • Drill deeper into RDFa, to build a complete understanding of the language;
  • Create an RDFa publishing application using Drupal, to learn how to publish RDFa for end users and crawlers;
  • Create an RDFa consuming application using Drupal, to learn how to consume RDFa and allow users to search the results;
  • Create a Yahoo! SearchMonkey application.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Mark is managing director of Backplane Ltd. He works on standards and applications at the juncture of rich user interfaces and the Semantic Web.
More about Mark Birbeck
IS THIS COURSE FOR YOU?
If you are a project manager trying to evaluate whether RDFa gives you a fast route to easily publishing semantic information, then this course will use real case-studies to help you decide. If you are a developer, about to embark on a project to publish semantic information by embedding RDFa in your HTML pages, then this course will show you how.

COURSE PREREQUISITES
To get the most from this course, you should have a basic knowledge of HTML. (You won't need to be a guru, but you'll need to know what it is.)

COURSE LABS & EXERCISES
We'll look first at the problems that RDFa can solve, and then dive into its simple syntax. Once you're familiar with RDFa, we'll start looking at how to build and test real applications, using tools such as Yahoo!'s SearchMonkey and Drupal.
