RUBY ON RAILS EXCHANGE 03-12-09
Yep, its that time of year again! Skills Matter will be organising the 3rd annual RoR eXchange on 3rd December 2009!
The conference has started! It looks like a nice, intimate event packed with talks, demo's and discussions. You can follow the event on twitter using tag #rorexchange
Also tweet any questions or topics you'd like to discuss during the two Parkbench sessions, which David Black and Andrew Chalkley will run later today.
There is a googlewave with the same public tag and you can join the RoR eXchange delegate network on ning.
We aim to provide an informal and intimate environment where we can share, learn, practice and hopefully have lots of fun!
Thursday 3rd December 2009
Track 1
09:30-10:00 WELCOME
Welcome message
10:15-11:00 ENTERPRISE RAILS HOSTING
Julian Fischer: Setting up a single virtual oder dedicated server is easy but what to do when more and more people bring in more and more load? View the podcast here...
11:05-11:50 NON-RELATIONAL DATABASES AND WORLD DOMINATION
Jason Davies: Apparently NoSQL is all the rage these days, but what does it really mean and what technologies are out there? When to use a non-relational database? How to decide which one to use to achieve world domination? How do I use CouchDB with Ruby on Rails? I'll explore all of these questions and any others you may have. View the podcast here...
11:55-12:40 RAILS CHOICES
David A. Black: Although well known as opinionated software, Rails
does let you choose among different possible ways to accomplish lots of the things you have to do: templating, session storage, application vs. database-level validations... As Rails moves towards version 3, choice and modularity are increasing. This talk looks at some specific choice examples and revisits the question of just how opinionated Rails is. 12:40-13:40 LUNCH & REFRESHMENTS
Lunch & Refreshments
14:30-15:15 DATABASES - HAVE IT YOUR WAY
Frederick Cheung: If you've used Rails, it's a safe bet to say that you've used Active Record. Active Record isn't the only ruby tool out there for manipulating your database though, and Rails 3 will play nicer than ever with other ORM libraries. Find out the similarities between some of the common ORM libraries, their differences and what makes them tick. View the podcast here...
15:20-16:05 THE ANATOMY OF RUBY I18N
Sven Fuchs: Sven Fuchs is the author of the I18n gem which is shipped with Rails to provide internationalization support. The gem is built in a modular way to make it easy for you to pick optional and add your own features. In this talk we will go over the architecture of the I18n gem and the advanced, optional features it comes with. We will also cover a few external extensions that are useful for building internationalized Rails applications. View the podcast here...
16:10-16:55 BUILDING IPHONE/ANDRIOD APPS FOR A RAILS BACKEND
Andrew Chalkley: Andrew Chalkley will give a talk on Building iPhone/Andriod apps for a Rails Backend. If you have any questions or topics you would like to see covered in Andrew's talk or discussed at the ParkBench Panel discussion, tweet them using tag #rorexchange and we'll try to feature these! More information on Andrew's talk coming soon! View the podcast here...
17:00 - 17:45 PARKBENCH PANEL DISCUSSION
: After a quick serving of Pizza & Drinks, we'll hold the second ParkBench Panel discussion, to discuss ideas, stuff we learned during the afternoon and stuff we would like to hear more about.
