HASKELL EXCHANGE 2012 10-10-12
Haskell eXchange 2012
Skills Matter's very First Haskell eXchange has kicked off! This fast paced day is bringing together some of the leading experts in Haskell providing a range of talks and discussions.
Neil Mitchell, our awesome programme lead, opened the Haskell conference, after which Simon Peyton Jones Keynote was both enormously brilliant and entertaining. Simon Marlow gave a talk on concurrency (and solved some of Emily's bugs whilst doing so!) and Lennart Augustsson explained how to implement a toy EDSL (Embedded Domain Specific Language) in Haskell. on EDSLS. Stay tuned on twitter #haskellx to find announcements of Skills Casts on the other talks of today...
not here today? we're recording for you!
We'll be publishing SkillsCast recordings throughout the day, featuring film footage, code and slides (you can find them by clicking on the talks below). You can also follow the Haskell eXChange on #haskellx if you'd like to see announcements of publication.

Track 1
09:00 - 09:30 REGISTRATION & BREAKFAST
Enjoy some breakfast whilst we process your registration. Neil Mitchell and Skills Matter will then welcome you to the Haskell eXchange 2012.
09:30-10.30 FRONT END LANGUAGE FEATURES
Simon Peyton Jones: In this talk I’ll reflect on the key features of the language and its community that has led to all this creative development. Despite the title Haskell may
not in the end dominate the world, but there are lots of interesting developments afoot, especially in (a) types and (b) parallelism. I’ll describe some of them, and speculate a little about the future. View the podcast here...
10:30-10:45 COFFEE, TEA & REFRESHMENTS
The Haskell eXchange break for tea, coffee and refreshments.
10:30-11:15 HIGH PERFORMANCE CONCURRENCY
Simon Marlow: The Haskell community could be justifiably accused of navel-gazing, that is, spending inordinate amounts of time designing beautiful programming models and APIs, while spending relatively less time building applications that solve real problems. This talk will take a different approach. View the podcast here...
11:30-11:45 COFFEE, TEA & REFRESHMENTS
The Haskell eXchange break for coffee, tea & refreshments.
11:45-12:30 MAKING EDSLS FLY
Lennart Augustsson: In this talk, Lennart will show how to implement a toy EDSL (Embedded Domain Specific Language) in Haskell. First, we will look at how to get a typed DSL embedded in Haskell. Second, we will consider executing such a language using an interpreter. Finally, we will use the LLVM bindings to generate efficient code for the toy EDSL. View the podcast here...
12:30 - 13:30 LUNCH
The Haskell eXchange break for lunch.
13:30-14:15 SCALABLE WEB APPLICATIONS WITH YESOD
Blake Rain: Yesod is used to develop fast and scalable web applications. Taking advantage
of Haskell's strong type system and compile-time guarantees, we are able to
solve many of the issues that can arise during development: from dealing with
the stateless nature of HTTP, to countering common security threats.

14:15-14:30 COFFEE, TEA & REFRESHMENTS
The Haskell eXchange breaks for coffee, tea & refreshments.
14:30-15:30 CLOUD HASKELL
Duncan Coutts: Cloud Haskell brings Erlang-style distributed concurrency to
Haskell. In this talk I'll talk about what it is and how you can
use it. I'll also describe the new implementation that we have
been working on, with a focus on robustness and flexibility. View the podcast here...
15:30-15:45 TEA, COFFEE, & REFRESHMENTS
The Haskell eXchange break for tea, coffee, & refreshments.
15:45-16:30 INTEGRATING HASKELL USING AMQP
Rob Harrop: Using AMQP, developers can easily bring the power of Haskell into more traditional enterprise settings. In this talk, I'll present some practical techniques for integrating powerful Haskell components into your architecture alongside typical enterprise applications. View the podcast here...
16:30-17:00 PARK BENCH DISCUSSION
: Whilst enjoying some pizza & drinks, we'll hold a ParkBench Panel discussion, to discuss ideas, stuff we learned during the morning and stuff we would like to hear more about. You will not only be able to ask your questions, but are also actively encouraged to join the panel to express your opinion and share your experience!ay's talks View the podcast here...
