The last gate on the path to production of software deployment is usually a function of the systems team. We are the people who get paged at 04:00h when things get broken, we are there on the front line when things go wrong, we have to work rapidly in constantly changing environments and it can be painful. In contrast with the software development community there seems to be much less open discussion about principles and practices within the field, yet we need to adapt to constantly shifting demands of responsiveness and agility to serve the business - practices such as continual deployment, A-B testing, scalable capacity all have massive impact on our field yet there are few forums to discuss this. This talk and discussion will cover the challenges and problems for System Administration and how Lean and Agile ideas can be applied to fix them, taking into account the realities of the day to day demands on systems teams time. This is a session for anyone interested in how to improve the capabilities of systems team, no prior lean or agile experience is required.
