THE LIMITED WIP SOCIETY : BUILDING A KANBAN BOARD
Are you overloaded with unrealistic work loads? Are you always fire fighting issues at work?
  • Are you interested in improving the way things happen around you?
  • Have you heard of Kanban and are interested in learning more? Are you looking for ideas on how to build a Kanban board?
  • Do you want to discuss ideas on how to teach people about Kanban?
If the answer to any of these questions is yes, or you just like learning new things and sharing your ideas, please come along to my workshop on building a Kanban board. The workshop is open to all levels of experience, with new people learning about Kanban and more experience people helping me find additional ways to guide people when using Kanban.

I will briefly cover the Kanban basics, setting the scene as to why you may choose to use a Kanban board and demonstrate some example boards I have created.

The main part of the session is a workshop where we collaboratively create a Kanban board for the Acme corp (or if someone wants to volunteer, we can do a Kanban for their company). As we build the board we will touch on some of the following Lean system thinking aspects that your Kanban could be used to visualise
  • Designing a Kanban (plan-doing-done, plan-do-check-act)
  • Value stream mapping
  • Visualising the work in progress (priorities, types of work, people)
  • Measure flow through the system
  • Early feedback
  • Identifying bottlenecks / constraints
  • Evolving the Kanban board - Kaizen (continuous improvement)
If you would like some background to this session, please see my talk at SkillsMatter on using Kanban for skills development, there are blog posts on Kanban to manage personal development and Kanban for Just-in-time skills development and a basic overview of Kanban.
