IN THE BRAIN OF NEIL BARTLETT, JAVA 7 MODULARITY – A VIEW FROM THE GALLERY
|
What's new in Java 7? There are some tweaks to the language, a new
garbage collector and better support for non-Java languages, but the
headline feature is undoubtedly modularity. The "classpath" has been
declared dead... but what exactly will replace it? Unfortunately the
official story from Sun provides only half an answer to this question;
the reality is more complex.
This talk draws together publicly available information from expert
group mailing lists, conference papers and code repositories to
present the current status and likely future of modularity in Java. It
covers: Project Jigsaw; JSR 294 and the "module" keyword; JSR 291 and
OSGi; and the Simple Module System proposal. The emphasis is on giving
you the factual information you need to plan for future changes in the
Java platform -- not on political grandstanding.
