JAVAWUG : JAVAWUG BOF 55 EASE INTO SCALA WEB DEVELOPMENT
JAVAWUG (Java Web User Group) is holding the 55th BOF (Birds-of-Feather) meetup at Skills Matter. Phil Miller will talk about ways to ease into Scala development.

The JVM hosts an exciting choice of newer languages, like JRuby, Groovy, JavaFX, Clojure and Scala, and as our industry increasingly bangs the drum for agile methodologies and high level concurrency support, these languages are becoming more hyped.

We've all taken a look at the offerings but we're left wondering which, if any, is worth betting on. Agilists look to the dynamic typing and short developer cycles of languages like JRuby and Groovy, while teams investing in concurrency are trying to beat down on mutable state with Clojure and Scala.

Phil will rationalise why you should consider using Scala in your next webapp, and how to mitigate this risk by blending in familiar tools like Spring and Maven for the rest of your development effort.

As we examine and build a simple Scala webapp, Phil will talk about the readability and writability of the language, then add some secret sauce, like currying and implicit conversions.
