In-Field Data Discovery through Location Based Services
Presented by Gobe Hobona from the Centre for Geospatial Science at the University of Nottingham

Historically, a student or researcher conducting fieldwork was only able to search for datasets relevant to their study sites after downloading data from their mobile devices into a computer back at their laboratories. The SPACER project is developing an Android application that improves the in-field data discovery process by enabling repositories to be searched whilst the student or researcher is still out in the field. The prototype makes use of the built-in GPS device, XML parsing and the Google Maps API. The repositories queried are based on standards of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) – a global group of over 380 private, public and academic organisations (http://www.opengeospa.... The project is managed by the Centre for Geospatial Science at the University of Nottingham and is funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) Rapid Innovation programme. Participating organizations include the British Geological Survey and Edina.
