HOME JAVA & JEE AJAX & RIA AGILE & SCRUM SOA & REST ERLANG RUBY ON RAILS OPEN SOURCE .NET DESIGN & DDD CLOUD & GRID

FREE OPEN SOURCE BUILD AND TEST WORKSHOP 08-12-08
Software developers, QA testers, and IT managers are challenged to rapidly build and test Ajax, Service Oriented Architecture (SOA,) and Rich Internet Applications (RIA) in a time when schedules are short, budgets are tight, standards are few, and much of this is new technology! Find out why AMD, Ford, and The Jackson Laboratory succeed with open source build and test software as a more affordable and flexible option to the traditional test vendors.

Learn how you can leverage open-source RIA application server technology from Appcelerator to rapidly build Ajax applications. Learn how you can leverage open-source testing tools (Selenium, soapUI, PushToTest, TestGen4Web, HTMLUnit) for functional testing, load and performance testing, and business service monitoring, with more flexibility than traditional solutions provide.

Frank Cohen, author of Skills Matter's Test Automation Bootcamp and the leading authority for testing and optimizing software developed with Web, SOA, AJAX and REST designs and implementations. and author of Fast SOA, and Andrew Oliver will lead the seminar.

Agenda
  • Module 1: The why, what, and how of open-source build and test tools vs. traditional tools
  • Module 2: Building applications with Rich Internet Application technology without learning JavaScript
  • Module 3: Testing using record/playback and scripting tools
  • Module 4: Identifying and solving performance bottlenecks in Rich Internet Applications (Web 2.0 and Ajax)
  • Module 5: Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) testing
  • Questions and Answers
Every attendee will receive a free CD with fully working copies of the open source build and test tools, including Appcelerator, Selenium, soapUI, PushToTest, TestGen4Web, and many others taught in this class.

Review:
PushToTest allows open source test automation for composite applications. It makes use of many open source test tools, each with particular advantages and solutions for different kinds of problems. It forms a distributed test environment that scales tests up and operates tests and service monitors across the network by orchestrating these tools. PushToTest is appropriate for load tests, functional tests and monitoring. It allows developers to turn their unit tests into functional tests and functional tests into load tests or service monitors with the help of wizards and recorders. It supports a variety of languages including Java, Jython, Groovy, PHP, and Ruby, among others.

Frank starts his talk by pointing out the benefits of taking a result-oriented approach for the development process and why an integrated environment for testing and operational management is necessary. As he explains, this kind of an approach is much more efficient than testing after an application has been built.

So how can we test an Ajax application with TestMaker? Frank’s live demonstration shows how we can add our own tags for testing into the code of a rich client application (RCA) that was built with the Appcelerator platform.

Repurposing is an important key point for allocating different responsibilities for developers, QA Technicians and IT Managers. Frank explains the PushToTest Repurpose Methodology and how Data Production Libraries and Protocol Handlers are used by it.

The second part of the talk starts with a brief description of services related to PushToTest’s commercial version for the open source platform. If you are interested in professional support, PushToTest also offers training, support & maintenance services.

The talk gets even more interesting as Frank starts a series of live demos of how to use the OST tools mentioned above. The first demo is about testing a Web 1.0 application with the TestGen4Web Firefox plug-in and TestMaker. TestGen4Web is used to record web application test use cases. Selenium IDE can also be used instead of TestGen4Web and Rex even shows how to use it. The next demonstration shows how to run a Selenium IDE test on a sample Ajax application. Finally, Frank shows how to use SoapUI and TestMaker for testing web service based applications. As he explains, the SoapUI utility can be used to build test use cases for SOAP-based web services.

In conclusion, PushToTest TestMaker Platform provides a powerful solution to test, optimise, monitor and govern information systems. It can create a big difference in surfacing performance issues in IT systems. More information about the platform and services provided can be found at PushToTest’s web site here.
