In The Brain of Paul Nasrat: Agile Pragmatic Systems Administration
Agile Pragmatic Systems Administration
In contrast with the software development community there seems to be much less open discussions about principles and practices within the field. Yet we need to adapt to constantly shifting demands of responsiveness and agility to serve the business practices such as continual deployment, A-B testing, scalable capacity all have massive impact on our field yet there are few forums to discuss this.
This talk and discussion covers the challenges and problems for System Administration and how Lean and Agile ideas can be applied to fix them, taking into account the realities of the day to day demands on systems teams time.
In this podcast Paul goes over some of the problems that you face in system teams and how to improve on them:
One of the negative aspects of Agile System administration is there is insufficient technology focused resources that are available to discover and learn the best ways to efficiently use Agile systems which leads to some interesting problems.
Having No source control makes it difficult to understand the issues you may be dealing with.
Paul Nasrat explains that although it may seem important it’s an inefficient method to resolve problems quickly should you not be available for whatever reason. To be completely efficient our system administration should be helpful enough for someone else to work with it.
Silo’s are a good way to make sure the system team are not wasting time sourcing code that you may not be sharing, by sharing your knowledge and code within system teams you can save a lot off the development time.
System vs Development can, if developed correctly, save a lot of system time and although there is technology to aid in this department it’s not often put into practice by the development team.
Individuals and interactions over processors and tools should be identified, working closely with the end user to identifying the goals and objective of the system may save more time than developing a solution that has more functionality that is required.
Paul goes over a few more Agile ideas before moving onto some questions from the guests.
