In The Brain of Rachel Davies:Agile Coaching Tips
After working a few years in the agile coaching environment, Rachel Davies reveals some of the techniques that can be found in her forthcoming book “Agile Coaching”.

Rachel identifies the groups level of experience and the roles that they play in their organizations. She explains that the objective for this seminar is to find out a little more about how to apply agile and how to introduce change in teams.

A slide with three pictures showing different sporting coaching techniques is shown; Rachel then asks the guests what they perceive the sporting techniques in the pictures to be. The first picture, an obvious referee or coach standing with a whistle in his mouth pointing in a direction; Rachel explains that people need this type of “coaching” to be told how or where they might be going wrong and to suggest solutions to fixing the problem. While at the same you cannot tell someone to do something because you are their manager as people do not tend to adjust to the authority hierarchy very well.

The second picture seems to be a coach or trainer observing over his team, the guests immediately start giving descriptions of the picture in words by calling out he is thinking, observing and evaluating. Rachel uses the picture as an opportunity to explain that in agile coaching there is a time where you have to sit back and observe the team from the outside and find ways to improve efficiency and productivity. The third picture is of a man which looks like he is throwing some oranges or balls to some players, this picture resembles the support to the team and how in agile coaching you also need to be supportive over the changes you are implementing in a team because change is hard and if you want your team to attain the desired results you have to show genuine interest and support for your team to reach them.
The talk focuses on the top ten tips for agile coaching, Rachel moves from ten down to one explaining each point and how to implement them in your team.
  • Ask questions to spark ideas.
  • Take time to listen.
  • Treat everyone with care and respect.
  • Make change as an experiment.
  • Go with the energy of the team.
  • Introduce an elephant in the room.
  • Watch out for warning signals.
  • Step back to see the big picture.
  • Take time out to reflect.
  • Have courage in your convictions.
