London Java Community:Techniques for dealing with difficult conversations and negotiations in software development
Techniques for dealing with difficult conversations and negotiations in software development
In this month’s LJC meet up, Mark Stringer came to speak about a topic that applies to much more than just software development; how to have difficult conversations within business. Although it was focused on software development the topics discussed can be useful in many circumstances. Mark’s aim throughout the talk is to help us develop the skills that difficult conversations can be avoided.
Mark introduces the three main issues that can make already difficult conversations worse: facts, identity and feelings. Facts is generally the most obvious reason for which conversations become difficult.
Identity is a major issue, especially within software and small business. When other people are brought onto a project to help out it can bring into question the identity of those who may feel their jobs are now threatened.
Finally Mark introduces how feelings can have an impact. Within business it is often considered that emotions and feelings should be left at home but in general we have no control of our emotions so that isn’t practical. We need to understand how to be sensitive towards others even though it may not be an open conversation.
Mark finishes with a few pointers on how we can all get better at having difficult conversations. There is no substitute for practicing dealing with the issues so that when it happens for real we can be prepared to react to it.
