London Software Craftsmanship Community:How can craftsmanship move the industry forwards?
How can craftsmanship move the industry forwards?
With the cost of a university education going through the roof its unsurprising that many junior developers find they lack the skills required by industry. Many large organisations simply rely on hiring lots of commodity developers to get work done: focussing on quantity not quality. This easily becomes a case of the blind leading the blind; with yesterday's mistakes being repeated all over again by a fresh generation of developers with no sense of history. Coupled with this, the reality for many talented, experienced developers is they find management roles more lucrative - depriving the next generation of developers of their experience. Into this the Software Craftsmanship movement emerges - bringing the focus back to the people that build the world's software: developers. By focussing on improving individual skill and sharing expertise with the next generation, this offers industry a chance to reverse this trend, to raise the bar of the whole industry and delight customers with the software we produce. In this panel discussion some of the leading lights of the Software Craftsmanship movement will answer your questions on the state of the industry; how can great developers differentiate themselves? How can they help the next generation develop? How can we demonstrate our value to potential employers and customers? Where does the industry go from here?

It's our pleasure to announce that our panel discussion will be composed by:

Steve Freeman and Nat Pryce's Growing Real Systems Guided by Tests

Steve Freeman's Growing Real Systems Guided by Tests is an advanced course for those who want to improve their practice of Test-Driven Development. This 2 day Test-Driven Development course shows how to use tests to guide the development of software. We show how to apply this critical skill, using test friction to show us where the boundaries in the code should be so that we can write expressive, coherent code. We also show how TDD works at the larger scale, helping us build reliable systems that fit into the usual soup of third-party services. In particular, we address working with asynchrony and distribution. Find out more here

Uncle Bob's Clean Code: Agile Software Craftsmanship

Even bad code can function. But if code isn't clean, it can bring a development organisation to its knees. Every year, countless hours and significant resources are lost because of poorly written code. But it doesn't have to be that way? This is a two-day hands-on course in which you will learn the principles and practices of Clean Code as described in Robert C. Martin's book: Clean Code: A Handbook of Agile Software Craftsmanship. You will also receive this book as part of the course materials. This Clean Code course alternates between lecture and exercise so that you can experience, first-hand, the practices and disciplines of these fundamental topics. Find out more here

Gojko Adzic's BDD for Developers

This hands-on BDD workshop will help you get the key skills needed to succeed with behaviour driven development and specification by example. Through simulations and practical exercises, you will apply the ideas and practices of BDD to solve the most common issues development teams have with specifications and tests. You will use Cucumber to define and automate BDD scenarios to provide stakeholders with visibility into software features and help the delivery teams drive development and build quality in from the start. ABOUT THE LONDON SOFTWARE CRAFTSMANSHIP COMMUNITY
We are a community of aspiring software craftsmen. The difference between good software and great software is the people that create it. Great programmers are continually learning and continually improving. The craftsmanship idea embodies this notion of continual learning and feedback.
