London Ruby User Group:TDD Fishbowl
TDD Fishbowl

Stuart Eccles, fresh from talking about Conan the Deployer at our February Meeting, has offered to run a Fishbowl session focussing on approaches to TDD.

The idea is not to focus on tedious tool debates like Test::Unit vs. RSpec or Cucumber vs. raw ruby for integration testing; these debates have rang throughout the ages and will continue to do so. We want to explore other debates, such as Obie Fernandez’s suggestion that TDD might not be the best approach for early-stage startups.

The format on the night will be that we’ll have a couple of short talks to seed the discussion and then get going on the panel discussion. The fishbowl format means that we have 5 chairs at the front, 1 of which is empty. People on the chairs can speak, and if someone from the audience wants to add something to the conversation, they can go up and take the empty chair. As soon as this happens, one of the original panelists must go and sit down.

Gojko Adzic's Test Driven Development Workshop

Gojko Adzic's two day workshop on Test Driven Development (TDD) enables you to experience and learn test driven development by doing it. You will be immersed in a realistic TDD project, allowing you to learn the practices and principles of test driven development and try them out in practice. Through facilitated exercises and discussion, you will experience two days of working on an agile test-driven team.

You will use and learn basic Test Driven Development practices including unit testing, refactoring and related agile practices such as continuous integration and pair programming. You will understand the reasons behind TDD and experience its benefits first-hand. By applying what you learn, you will be able to build quality into software from the start, design and develop systems fit for purpose and write code that is easy to maintain and evolve in the future. The is a completely hands-on workshop with coding straight from the start, interrupted by very short presentations to explain the practices and put things into a wider perspective. It is based on the very latest tools, current knowledge and ideas from the community. Find out more here

Peter Lubbers' HTML5 WebSocket and Communication

Peter Lubbers' HTML5 WebSocket and Communication is a highly practical two day course that will teach you how to use HTML5 WebSocket and HTML5 Communication to build real-time web applications. The course covers the use of HTML5 WebSocket, Server-Sent Events, Cross-Document Messaging, and XMLHttpRequest Level 2. This course focuses on how to create next generation HTML5 web applications. With these new standards, the browser can now enjoy the first-class citizenry of network communication that has long been enjoyed exclusively by desktop client/server applications. You will learn how to use the emerging standards to build scalable, mission critical real-time Web 2.0 applications. To find out about learning objectives, dates and how to get some tickets, go here

Damjan Vujnovic's Advanced JavaScript Workshop

As Douglas Crockford once said, JavaScript is the world's most misunderstood programming language. It is also one of the world's most popular programming languages and one of the cornerstones of a modern web application development. With web clients becoming thicker and more complex, it is no longer easy to get away with sloppy, ad-hoc JavaScript programming style. In this advanced JavaScript hands-on course you will learn how to write good code (by employing its good features and avoiding quirks and common pitfalls). Peter Lubbers' HTML5 “Fast Track”

In this HTML5 “Fast Track” training course, you will learn how to create HTML5 web pages and web applications using HTML5 markup and HTML5 JavaScript APIs.HTML5 is the next major milestone in HTML and it is not just another incremental enhancement; it represents an enormous advance for modern web applications. HTML5 is such a big step forward that it prompted Vic Gundotra, VP of Engineering at Google, to say “The web has not seen this level of transformation, this level of acceleration, in the past ten years… we're betting big on HTML5.” A large number of features are already supported in browsers, so it is time to start using it!
