FREE: Eclipse DemoCamp: Fernando Porter on Symbian Analysis Workbench
Symbian Analysis Workbench
A short demo introducing Symbian Analysis Workbench, and how it makes it easier for developers to optimize Symbian C++ development.
Review:
In this talk, Fernando introduces the Symbian Analysis Workbench (SAW) for use in developing applications for mobile phones that run the Symbian OS. Normally it is very difficult to see how software is utilizing the hardware on mobile devices, but through the use of tracing, the SAW can give you information about the operating system. The idea is that you run the phone app, generate the trace, and then transfer it at a later stage back to the computer for analysis.
Fernando then demonstrates the use of SAW and how it can be used. He first illustrates a memory leak and how this can be spotted using SAW. Memory leaks are a key issue with mobile phones where memory is limited. The second demonstration is of a profiler showing the CPU usage and more importantly what it's being used for.
It's clear that the SAW is the ideal tool for analysing mobile applications, but currently it's only available for the the Symbian platform. This is likely to change quickly, though, since the code is open source!
