Improving Collaboration with Selenium IDE
Stephen Cresswell will be presenting at this month's Groovy Grails UG on natural language testing. Natural language testing is where the tests that you write are in natural language, rather than code. This can make it much easier for non-developers to create test cases and is particularly important in the areas of acceptance testing and functional testing.
This session will show how jQuery, jBehave and a small set of custom
extensions were used in the development of VisualHospital (a
pull-based patient management system resulting from lean healthcare
research) to add behavioural support to Selenium IDE. By building a
flexible DSL for functional testing and by test driving from the
outside in, we created a low maintenance, highly expressive test
suite, while retaining the benefits of Selenium IDE's minimalist
interface. The combination of a simple test client and tests written
in the business domain language triggered a natural evolution in our
development process, dramatically enhancing collaboration between
technical and non-technical team members. Other benefits included a
test suite that genuinely documents the system, improved class design,
consistent page structure and reduction in test duration.
