In The Brain of Gojko Adzic: Games in the Cloud
Games in the Cloud
Gojko Adzic talks about a multi-player casino project that started about 6 months ago. The system is deployed in the cloud and uses a processing grid. The talk is mainly about the architectural challenges faced until now.

The cloud system is based on Amazon EC2. Gojko lists the four key points that they thought hardly about as: Storage, Monitoring, Load Balancing and Security. He says that Amazon boxes were suitable for testing boxes on demand and it saved them from the complexities that may should have required an infrastructure professional. Another advantage is that it is very easy to get or get rid of these boxes and this makes it easier to scale up or down. Furthermore upfront costs for deployment are reduced. The company also plans to use the service for offsite encrypted backup.

Next, Gojko talks about some of the surprises about the cloud. Firstly, multicasting or broadcasting did not work because of security reasons. Also, a good way for shared storage couldn’t be found. Routing rules must be configured with internal addresses but assigned IP addresses are external to Amazon. This prevents internal addresses to be fixed. Lastly, behaviour of pre-packaged systems can produce unpredictable results because of configuration problems. Gojko explains some of the workarounds in order to fix these problems. Gojko demonstrates how the cloud resources are configured.

Second part of the talk focuses on the processing grid, Gigaspaces. Gojko says that it saved them a lot of development time because of the processing model and SLA clustering. It works on the cloud and on dedicated infrastructure, it has automated cloud deployment and has low upfront costs. Again, Gojko shows the code for using Gigaspaces and how the deployment is done easily with Maven. Download the slides here
