Spring in Finance eXchange 2008: Rod Johnson on Keynote: The Spring Framework
Keynote: The Spring Framework
Rod Johnson opens the Spring in Finance eXchange with a keynote on his vision for the Spring Framework.

Review:
The Spring open source project grew out of Rod Johnson’s book: Expert One-on-One J2EE Design and Development (Wrox Press, 2002). Some readers proposed to develop further solutions in cooperation whilse at a forum provided by the book publisher. They wanted to use open source to simply find solutions to problems they face during everyday programming. The framework focuses on simplicity, pragmatism, modularity and power.

Dependency Injection (DI) and Aspect Oriented Programming (AOP) are the main two benefits that the framework provides. With DI, objects do not need to know much information about the other objects. AOP makes it possible to inject behaviour. The benefit that these provide is Portable Service Abstraction.

The scope and abilities of Spring – where and how it's used - have changed significantly over the past few years. Data centres are more and more likely to be virtualised and become composed of several units, and the vision of Spring is compatible with that.

SpringSource is the company behind Spring. Their acquisition of Covalent indicates the leadership role and vision of the company in providing open source services down the road. SpringSource is also involved in the Apache foundation, AspectJ, and Equinox, among others. There are3 main areas where SpringSource contributes to the community: Spring embedded runtime, that can run in any environment; developer tooling; and server platforms.

Spring dmServer is a novel and innovative application server. The entire server structure is based on modules. It incorporates OSGi bundles and can deploy WAR files.

In conclusion, Spring provides an efficient environment for building, running and managing applications.
