Sustainable IT – from Datacentre to Cloud
Matt Deacon talks about Sustainable IT, from Datacentre to Cloud.
Review:
Efficient use of resources and energy in IT systems can create a big difference in reducing carbon emissions and achieving sustainable development. Matt Deacon, Chief Architectural Advisor for the Developer and Platform Group at Microsoft Ltd talks about environmental concerns that should be considered while making decisions regarding enterprise systems. He also talks about Microsoft’s strategy for sustainable IT.
Sustainable IT can also save a tremendous amount money for enterprises. In the next year, there is going to be a market of approximately £8.5bn in energy saving products and technologies. There is money to be saved and money to be made.
Companies should take ownership of their energy bills by measuring their power consumption in order to save energy. “Sleepers” (i.e. mostly unused servers) and “Hot spots” (i.e. servers that produce too much heat) should be detected and avoided. Consolidation of services should also be organised to reduce a company's carbon footprint. Other systems than data centres should be considered seriously. All these kinds of actions should be continuously managed and improved.
Data centres are places where huge savings can be made. Matt Deacon explains some of the energy saving techniques at various Microsoft data centres. He presents a short video explaining the latest “green” innovations and practices being implemented in Microsoft's newest Chicago Data Centre.
To conclude, Matt explains that our future is in our hands. There are many opportunities for innovation and savings in the area.
