Functional Programming eXchange 2009: Robert Pickering on Using combinators to tackle the HTML rendering problem
Using combinators to tackle the HTML rendering problem
Rendering HTML that is dynamic and looks good the many browsers people use today is a tricky problem. In this presentation we’ll dig into one part of the WebSharper platform, a new product from IntelliFactory, that aims to tackle this problem by using a DSL/combinator approach. WebSharper provides a library, written in F#, that allows you to create an abstract description of a web page, or part of a web page, that can be rendered into HTML and uses JQuery to provide dynamic functionality. These web pages parts can then be composed, and recomposed, into fully functioning web pages using functional programming techniques. This ensures that a web site is made up of the minimal amount of code possible.
