Scala Days 2012: Dick Wall on An Engineer's Guide to the Scala Community
An Engineer's Guide to the Scala Community

The Scala community already has some of the best developers in the world involved and working on libraries or even the core com- piler and APIs. However, one of the bigger challenges facing the continued expansion of the Scala community is the experience for newcomers to the language. Recently Scala has started to garner criticism that the community can be abrasive or unwelcoming to beginners.

In this talk, we will examine how statements like this demon- strate a breakdown in solid engineering thinking. What if we ap- ply the same engineering and problem solving skills that we use when working on Scala to our dealings with the Scala community? It seems to have become "fashionable" to demonstrate poor inter- personal skills when dealing with people in the community, some going so far as to wear Asperger's as a badge of honor. This is more of an indication that ego is winning over solid engineering practices.

What does it mean to apply a sound engineering approach to dealing with the Scala community? The talk will discuss many points, including the following:

- What do I hope to get out of my contact with the Scala community?
- How do I best go about achieving those goals?
- Why a healthy Scala community matters.
- A basic grounding in human empathy.
- Game theory in the community.
- The importance of first impressions, both personal and in development.
- Knowing when to hold and when to fold.
- Entering hostile territory.
- Dealing with impossible situations.

If you talk to people in the Scala community, write blogs, or even write libraries that others will use, please consider coming to this talk. It may be that your value could be greater with im- proved inter-personal dealings than just writing better code alone.
