Making Big Data Small: Streaming Algorithms in Scala
In this talk Noel will discuss a class of algorithms, streaming algorithms, that allow real-time processing of data, scale extraordinarily well, and are simple to implement. Streaming algorithms were developed to handle data capacities that exceed our ability to store them (e.g. the Large Hadron Collider) but turn out to be a great fit for small teams that want to move quickly on data analysis projects.

In this talk Noel will describe the Bloom filter and Count-Min sketch for counting item occurrence and heavy hitter and quantile algorithms for estimating frequency information. If there is time and interest the talk will discuss lock-free stochastic gradient descent for learning classifiers and recommendation systems

Typesafe’s Fast Track to Akka

This two-day Fast Track to Akka course, designed and delivered by Philipp Haller, a long-term member of the Scala team, is what you need to get started building powerful concurrent applications with the Akka event-driven middleware framework.

By the end of this course:

- Design scalable, fault-tolerant concurrent applications using Akka's actors
- Test, tune, and configure Akka applications
- Know best practices for designing asynchronous, event-driven systems using Akka
- Be confident to start using Akka in production systems

Philipp Haller has been a member of the Scala team since 2006. In 2010 he received a PhD in computer science from EPFL for his research on concurrent programming with race-free actors in Scala. Philipp is the creator of Scala's first actors library, as well as a contributor to the Scala language, standard library, and tools.

David Pollak’s Lift Basics Workshop

This Lift Basics course by David Pollak (creator of Lift), delivered by Franz Bettag (Lift's newest committer), introduces Scala developers to the Lift Web Framework. You will learn how to create dynamic, interactive, secure websites using Lift. This Lift Basics course covers creating a basic Lift project, dynamic content with Snippets, site navigation and access control via SiteMap, forms including multi-page Wizards, and creating real-time, scalable sites with Lift's Comet support.

This one-day course will be delivered by Franz Bettag, a BSD-enthusiastic hacker with a Scala fetish, a Ruby addiction who loves network engineering and pentesting. Franz has a strong PostgreSQL and FreeBSD/NetBSD background.
