Scala eXchange 2011: Chris Marshall on Stairway to Heaven or “Java with Closures”
Stairway to Heaven or “Java with Closures”
In this talk, Chris Marshall -- one of the four scala gold-badged users on StackOverflow -- will broadly cover the challenges of moving from Java to Scala “in the enterprise”, pitfalls, pratfalls, and all. In a production environment, it’s not enough that your favourite language be pretty: it must co-exist and interoperate with legacy systems and libraries. Your co-workers and managers must be prepared to let you use it. It must have a useable development environment. It must be stable. You must decide which technologies to use and what counts as idiomatic style. Chris will present one journey; from wishing for a “Java with Closures” onto a path through a forest of new concepts: monoids, monads, applicative functors and folds. Chris will ask: Is this a workable vision of the future to offer Java developers now? Looking back 2 and a half years later, was any of this a good idea?
