ScalaX London Party - Thursday 12th December

Did you enjoy the first day of Scala eXchange? It's party time now! Visit the Skills Matter booth during ScalaX for a Party Ticket (tickets are limited to 400 only - so grab one while they last!) to enjoy our Party at Codenode's {{SpaceBar}} and share your experience and impressions of ScalaX with other ScalaX attendees.

We will have our very own ScalaX double decker routemaster buses bringing you from the BDC (Business Design Centre, 52 Upper Street) to CodeNode. Buses will be ready outside the BDC once the conference ends on Thursday 12th December (straight after the last session at 6.30pm) to bring you to CodeNode!

If you prefer the good old London Underground, CodeNode is a five-minute walk from Moorgate Tube Station, which is just two stops from Angel (the closest station to the BDC, where Scala eXchange takes place), and it's served by the Northern Line.

You can come along from the conference or meet us at CodeNode for an evening of good music, games, food and drinks – a chance to share your ideas with each other in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. We look forward to having you with us!

And if you need some help finding your way home/to your hotel once the party's over, please visit the Transport for London's website which contains full information on how to move around in London.

Sneak Preview

Join our Keynote speaker Eric Torreborre to learn why he is excited to take part in this year's Scala eXchange London.

Eric is a recovering C++/Java developer who fell in love with functional programming and was incredibly happy the day he landed his first Scala job. The companies he has worked for range from very small start-ups to huge corps in all sort of sectors: telecoms, banking, pharmaceuticals, software editing.

What will you be sharing this year? What inspired you to give this talk?

This year I want to talk about a subject that is dear to my heart: modularity. Especially in a context where many developers are attracted to Functional Programming but can find themselves a bit lost when they have to structure large applications or services with functions only. Fortunately we have plenty of tools in Scala to help with that!

Which other talks from Scala eXchange London are you excited about? And why?

I am certainly curious about John de Goes and Wiem Zine keynote talk on "Scala: End Game" after the stir caused by "Scala: Infinity Wars" last year. I want to know if the movie ends well :-). Otherwise I will probably attend all the talks on Dotty and I know there is a talk on Scala Native with Unikernels which makes me want to know more.

What made you want to be a part of Scala eXchange London this year?

Simply, I was contacted to give a keynote! This is such a chance to share my thoughts on a subject which I am passionate about and a great opportunity to research it further. I could only say "yes".

Do you have any blog posts/podcasts or materials you think people might enjoy reading before coming along to your talk?

I would not recommend any reading but I would ask them to do a bit of thinking. Can programming be a bit more like Lego building, with easy ways to find and assemble small bricks to make beautiful objects? Why does it feel sometimes so hard to assemble those bricks, to re-assemble then when needed, to share them with others?

What's the most satisfying aspect of managing open-source projects?

There are a bunch of magical moments. When you create a solution which you like and you realize that other people like it as well. When those same people start building on your ideas to make things even better, in ways which you would not have imagined. And finally when people leave even the smallest contributions: upgrade dependencies, fix typos, add a test, all those things that are acts of kindness and care.
