Stephan studied physics and worked as an oceanographer at the University of Bremen. In 2001 he started in software development by joining the test team for an object-oriented database system. He specialised in automated software tests and agile methods and worked on topics as diverse as precision navigation systems, payment platforms, health care systems, telecommunication, and social networks.
