Thinking the Unthinkable

This is a time of deep uncertainty, whatever your business and its size. Leaders are struggling to grasp and understand the enormity of change. A significant number have confirmed confidentially to us that they are scared and overwhelmed.

Unthinkables, unpalatables and multiple disruptions of every kind are challenging their assumptions of business stability and optimism. Most are trapped by out-moded concepts of leadership and obligations for meeting quarterly targets.

Meanwhile exciting and dramatic leaps in technology are revolutionising business realities. They are sharpening these pressures profoundly. Machine learning, AI. Robotics. They turn conformist assumptions on their head. These and new economic realities mean the future of work is uncertain. They shorten time lines for leaders to assess risk and opportunity, then make sound judgements.

As a result, even the stability of our society and the business of business faces existential risk. Additionally, the new surge in NEXTGEN protests on the streets highlight the new impatience for major decisions on how to end the climate emergency.

In these times of radical uncertainty and dramatic technological innovations, some organisations are learning, step by step, how to thrive on change. You too can learn how they do that. There are lessons for us all.

Nik Gowing and Chris Langdon share latest findings from their ongoing Thinking the Unthinkable project, a five year, non-partisan investigation into the new frailties of leadership at all levels.

This will be a dynamic, interactive, brainstorming session. So please come along with your experiences, ideas and suggestions.
