How to Steer Your Machine Learning / Data Science Career Towards Fighting Climate Change

Tuesday, 17th September at CodeNode, London

This meetup was organised by London Climate Engineers in September 2019

How to Steer Your Machine Learning / Data Science Career Towards Fighting Climate Change

Matt will offer a whistle stop tour of different industries where machine learning and data science can be used to help fight climate change. The talk will aim to cover a broad range of domains of application and machine learning skills without going into too much depth in any one area in an effort to show just how many options there are out there for leveraging your skills. Existing industries where machine learning is being exploited for climate friendly purposes include energy, transportation, finance, the built environment, and agriculture to name a few. We'll also consider how to try and weigh up the evidence for the potential impact you could have with different opportunities and why it is worth your time to be involved.

Matt Lee

Matt recently made the decision to switch from the film industry to AI in order to have a more impactful career. He is currently a MSc student in machine learning at UCL and also has a background in maths and physics. This talk represents a summary of his exploration of the application of machine learning to fighting climate change as he starts his new career.
