This talk discusses Ziran and Bin Bin's initiatives and solutions on how to build IoT that respects privacy. It will walk you through a loosely coupled end to end IoT system, from new device on-boarding to remote access via gateway, which was built using JavaScript technologies and frameworks. At each stage, privacy considerations will be addressed and solutions will be explained. To address the issue of resource restriction in embedded devices, we will introduce you to JerryScript, an ultra-light JavaScript engine by Samsung. It is followed by a comparison of popular JavaScript platforms based on JerryScript that provide direct JavaScript APIs to developers. The open gateway framework is node.js based and targets at decentralized ‘Internet of Things’ with privacy and security in mind. At network infrastructure aspect, we will first look into the concept of on-device processing and analytics introduced by edge computing. Based on it we will then discuss our implementations of Federated Learning on Edge devices, in which privacy is preserved by keeping all the user data on local device and only sending updates of “model” to server.
